Dugal is a dear dear boy. When he goes outside into the garden, he will not return until I say “treat”. With terriers, it’s always what’s in it for them. That’s why I love all terriers. They are not lap dogs nor are they Golden Retrievers or Labs. They are terriers. Scotties are loving and loyal for those they respect. One never allows a Scottie to be the boss. When I was a little girl, my mother would take us to see my Aunt Lottie in Lakewood, New Jersey so that we could escape Polio which was rampant in New York City at that time in the 1940s. One day we visited a woman who had two Scotties. My mother and my aunt went to the kitchen to smoke and have coffee with the lady we visited. My sister and I were left in the parlour with the woman’s two Scotties. One was a brindle and the other was black. I remember this like yesterday. I tried to pet them and they bared their teeth and would not allow us near. At that point in my life, I was about six or seven, I vowed that I would one day get a Scottie and I would get him to love one and all. I have. He is a wonderful wonderful dog.
