Fur Disrespect

Fox

Special Guest Blog from Janice the Yankee Dog Whisperer

I live on Long Island, New York, USA. Our area is particularly affluent; its residents rather spoiled and insulated from the injustices and poverty of the rest of the world. Most people in my area don’t want to know what’s happening outside of their world. ‘Ignorance is bliss’ as they say.

Several days ago, I had lunch with three women in a lovely Italian restaurant. During the course of conversation, I mentioned that many red foxes on Long Island have mange. Not one of them knew what mange was nor seemed to care.

With that, the conversation turned to one of the women who wears a silver fox jacket. She began to talk about the jacket and I felt compelled to say, “You do know how they are trapped?” She dismissed me with a wave of her perfectly manicured hand, complete with artificial hot pink nails.

This lady continued to regale us with how well she takes care of her “animals”. Yes, that is how she refers to her fur collection. They are kept in refrigerated conditions during the summer. When she buys new “animals” and takes them home they are “petted and fluffed”. And, by the way, her silver fox is of a “special” colour. The other two women were laughing their heads off. I was so appalled. What a lonely feeling.

Thank you for your honest and heartfelt words Janice. We here at DogBum consider the fox family. Bad Karma to these Cruella de Vil’s. May they eventually see the error of their ways (or at least have red paint splashed on them!)
